Palo Pinto County Historical Commission (PPCHC) is a volunteer organization dedicated to preserve, protect, and promote history within the County.

The PPCHC is comprised of members of the County commissioners Court and nominated delegates chosen by the commission every other year.

Committees of the PPCHC

History Appreciation Committee

This committee conducts Texas and County history appreciation week through appropriate activities, programs or announcements; publicize commission work; cooperate with history and visitor related committees; sponsored historical tours, dedications, commemorations and observances.

The History Appreciation committee strives to create countywide awareness and appreciation of historic preservation and its benefits and uses. Potential projects include the following:

  • Conduct Texas and County history appreciation programs.
  • Work with schools and civic organizations to present programs on the county's history.
  • Sponsor historical tours, dedications, commemorations and observances. The PPCHC sponsors a tour every other year, of areas which are normally not open to the public.
  • Organize activities with Junior Historian chapters in the County

Marker Committee

This committee studies, surveys and reviews subjects and sites for possible marking; prepares and submits appropriate applications; updates Marker lists; secures locations and obtains permission of erecting markers.

The Marker committee is responsible for all matters related to Official Texas History Markers. This responsibility includes the following:

  • Survey subjects and sites for possible historical markers.
  • Research and prepare marker applications as possible.
  • Help persons interested in obtaining a marker through the application process.
  • Review all Marker applications for accuracy and completeness before submitting them to the Texas Historical Commission.

Archaeology Committee

PPCHC undertakes activities that promote the preservation of archaeological resources within the County.

Oral History Committee

The Oral History Committee oversees the commission's endeavors in oral history projects. This committee determines long-range goals for the oral history program, coordinates the placement of audio or videotaped interviews, and/or transcripts in libraries and other archival centers.
